Notes From The Past & Future

03

Prior to going to Hong for the first time in 2018, I had only seen the city through various vintage photographs (one inserted below - taken in 2001) as I explored my parent’s scrapbooks and browsed through media outlets. Thus, my previous perception was created through the filtered lens of a camera, making everything seem picture-perfect.

However, the reality that cage homes are so common sparked the need to create a better future for those in my community. My hope is to return with a solution to lessen poverty rates and increase the living conditions within not only Hong Kong but in other Cantonese communities like New York City, Boston, and Los Angeles. In order to do so, I hope my education and mindset must be refined in an atmosphere that emphasizes diversity and culture. Although I am unsure of what I want my path to be like as I pursue life after school, I know that my experiences will provide me with the courage and support to do well in any given situation, and continue to fuel my desire to gain more knowledge to make a change.
